New regulation creates opportunities for businesses to adopt sustainable alternatives and align with global environmental standards
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopia has officially enforced a nationwide ban on single-use plastic bags, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) announced Saturday. The ban takes effect following a six-month transition period, during which businesses and individuals were expected to comply with the new regulations under the Solid Waste Management and Disposal Proclamation 1383/2017.
The measure prohibits the production, import, storage, sale, and use of single-use plastic bags across the country. Individuals found violating the ban face fines ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 Ethiopian birr, the Authority warned.
Why This Matters
Rapid urbanization, population growth, and economic expansion have led to widespread use and improper disposal of single-use plastic bags, which often end up polluting the environment. Plastic products can persist in soil for over a century without decomposing, contaminating water bodies, harming biodiversity, undermining agricultural productivity, and posing significant risks to human and environmental health.
The ban aims to:
Safeguard citizens’ right to a clean and healthy environment
Reduce exposure to diseases, including cancer, linked to environmental pollution
Promote sustainable waste management practices
“This regulation is a critical step toward protecting our environment and public health,” said an EPA representative. “We urge all citizens to comply with the law, take responsibility for protecting their communities, and contribute to reducing plastic pollution.”
Opportunity for Businesses
For manufacturing firms, retailers, importers, and investors, the ban signals a shift toward sustainable packaging and circular economy practices. Businesses that proactively adopt alternatives—such as biodegradable materials, reusable packaging, and resource-efficient models—will be better positioned to:
Comply with new regulations and avoid penalties
Meet growing consumer and investor demand for sustainability
Align with international market standards (EU, US, and global brands)
